Arsenal beat Girona 4-1 as Arteta signals transfer market ambition
Arsenal’s 4-1 pre-season victory over Girona, headlined by 16-year-old Max Dowman, underscored the club's deepening homegrown talent pool as it actively pursues high-value targets like Vinicius Junior in the transfer market.
Arsenal defeated Girona 4-1 in a pre-season friendly at Municipal de Montilivi in Catalonia on Sunday, in a match that highlighted the growing financial value of the club’s academy graduates. Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman scored one goal and set up another, while debutant Christos Tzolis also found the net in front of 13,540 spectators.
For a top-tier European football club navigating an inflated transfer market, developing homegrown talent offers a vital competitive and financial edge. Dowman’s performance, capped by a powerful second-half finish, provided manager Mikel Arteta with a ready-made number ten. This depth is particularly notable given that captain Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze have yet to return from post-World Cup breaks.
Fellow academy graduate Myles Lewis-Skelly, whose form was crucial to Arsenal's Premier League title win last season, also impressed with his progressive passing. His link-up with Dowman for Arsenal's third goal underscored a pipeline of internal assets that reduces the need for expensive external acquisitions.
That internal strength is balancing an aggressive external transfer strategy. Arsenal have signed just two players this summer—Tzolis and goalkeeper Illan Meslier—following a season where they won the Premier League but lost the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain. Tzolis’s deflected debut goal against Girona suggested a capable addition to an attack that was missing five of its seven usual European finalists.
The club’s most significant market manoeuvre remains its pursuit of Vinicius Junior. Arsenal are monitoring the Real Madrid forward, who has a year left on his contract, though the Spanish club has no intention of selling and expects him to sign an extension.
Arteta laughed off a joking question from a reporter about when Vinicius Jr would join the club, leaving the mixed zone without addressing the speculation. However, he was unequivocal about the club's broader financial intent. "Well, we are really active, trying to improve and evolve the team. That's clear," Arteta told reporters. "We expect to have movements in the next few weeks, obviously, because we want to get better like anybody else. And you can just see the transfer market and our opponents. What we are doing, we won't sit still, and we are very ambitious in what we want to do."
Arsenal face Real Betis in Dublin on August 5 before hosting Como on August 12. Their competitive schedule begins with the Community Shield against Manchester City on August 16, followed by a Premier League fixture against Coventry on August 21. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus were also on the scoresheet against Girona, with Arnau Martinez scoring a brief consolation header for the hosts.
