Holland's Spider-Man return draws crowds as franchise eyes exit
Tom Holland's fourth Spider-Man film arrives to strong reviews, but hints from its stars about stepping away raise questions about the future of Marvel's most reliable box-office property.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has opened in cinemas, bringing Tom Holland back to the lead role for a fourth standalone film. The picture, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, also features Zendaya reprising her role as MJ, alongside Jon Bernthal's Punisher and Sadie Sink in a closely guarded role.
Sony will be watching the box office closely. The commercial benchmark is 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed $1.9bn worldwide. While Brand New Day scales back from the multiverse format of its predecessor to focus on a grounded story where Parker's friends have forgotten him, early crowds suggest it is poised to be among Marvel's most successful releases.
Largely positive reviews should help sustain ticket sales through the crucial opening weeks. The Telegraph's Robbie Collin called it "the best Spider-Man film since the Tobey Maguire era", praising the "real yearning and perplexity" between Holland and Zendaya. Empire's John Nugent declared the hero is "still Marvel's ace in the pack". However, some reviewers noted structural fatigue. David Rooney wrote in the Hollywood Reporter that the film "chugs along satisfactorily even with the occasional patch of sluggishness and the usual overly convoluted plot contortions".
For studio executives and distributors, the more pressing long-term narrative is what comes next. Holland has explicitly signalled that his decade-long tenure is nearing an end. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he said: "It's going to change, for sure. There is a whole plan that we have been working on since, I would say, Spider-Man No Way Home. I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it is really exciting."
Zendaya is also preparing to step back from the blockbuster machine. She told Elle earlier this year: "I think that after this, I'm going to have to take a little bit of a break." When pressed on her future plans by Entertainment Tonight, she replied: "Oh, girl, nothing. Just mind my business!"
Recasting a superhero franchise that consistently generates over a billion dollars per instalment carries significant financial risk. Audience loyalty is currently tied directly to these actors. Fans like Joe note Holland has "shown his progression" over the years, adding: "Half his life he has been doing this character. He's handled it very well."
As Sony and Marvel map out their future slates, managing this transition will be a defining test. The immediate priority is maximising Brand New Day's theatrical run, but the underlying challenge is replacing the stars who have driven this unprecedented commercial run.
