Blue Bolt faces Precise in pivotal Group One Prix Rothschild at Deauville
Top fillies Blue Bolt and Precise renew their rivalry in Sunday's Prix Rothschild, a Group One contest that will heavily influence European bloodstock valuations and stud syndications.
Blue Bolt and Precise will meet for a second time this season in the Group One Prix Rothschild at Deauville on Sunday. The race serves as the weekend's feature event, bringing together two of the continent's most valuable racing assets in a contest that carries significant financial implications for the European breeding industry.
Victories at this elite level drastically increase a filly's residual value as a broodmare, driving premiums in the global bloodstock market. With both horses already commanding top-tier syndication interest, the Deauville outcome will directly impact future breeding fees and international yearling sales across Britain, Ireland and France.
Andrew Balding trains Blue Bolt, who secured her first Group One success by defeating Precise in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last month. The market currently favors her to secure a fourth consecutive victory under jockey Colin Keane.
"She seems in good nick and if she repeats the performance from Newmarket she will take a lot of beating," Balding said. He noted that she has never travelled far from home before, adding: "But if she takes the travel in her stride then she should hold every chance of continuing her winning run."
Aidan O'Brien saddles Precise, a four-time Group One winner whose previous victories include the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Ryan Moore will ride the filly, who O'Brien believes underperformed at Newmarket due to a poor start.
"She was stood in the gates a little bit long the last day and lost a couple of lengths and turned her head a little bit," O'Brien said. He remains optimistic about her prospects, adding: "We're happy with everything she's doing and looking forward to seeing her again, she's been a special filly for us so far."
The deep Prix Rothschild field also includes Evolutionist, a 1,000 Guineas runner-up trained by Karl Burke, alongside Moon Target and Green Spirit. Beyond the feature, the Deauville meeting hosts the Prix Six Perfections for two-year-olds, where British raider Nicely faces local prospects Woot Woot and Queen Of The Day.
These juvenile contests are closely monitored by bloodstock agents looking to identify early commercial value before the major autumn yearling sales. The weekend also features competitive flat action at Chester, where the unbeaten Lifeplan heads the Listed Queensferry Stakes, and Yarmouth.
