UK rationing data links early sugar limits to 23% dementia drop

A study of UK post-war rationing shows restricting sugar in infancy cuts dementia risk by up to 23%, offering European health systems a long-term strategy to ease the financial burden of cognitive decline.

Researchers have found that restricting sugar intake during pregnancy and the first two years of life significantly lowers the risk of developing dementia decades later. The study, led by Jiazhen Zheng at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Guangzhou, analyzed nearly 65,000 individuals born around the time of British sugar rationing.

Wartime and post-war UK food controls remained in place until 1953. Once those rules expired, daily intake surged from roughly 41g to 80g.

Scientists divided participants based on their exposure to these historical food controls. Those exposed to rationing from before birth up to age two showed a 23% lower risk of dementia compared to those born after the restrictions ended.

Individuals exposed to lower sugar levels from before birth through their first year experienced a 21% reduction in risk. Furthermore, for those who eventually developed the condition, early-life sugar restriction delayed the average age of diagnosis by 2.6 years.

Medical records beginning at age 55 allowed the team to track cognitive diagnoses over a subsequent 15-year period. For European policymakers and healthcare systems facing aging populations, delaying cognitive decline offers substantial economic relief.

Dementia care places immense strain on public budgets across the continent. Pushing back the onset of the disease by over two years could significantly reduce long-term care costs and ease pressure on social services.

“Limiting sugar during the earliest stages of life may have lasting benefits for brain health,” Zheng noted regarding the findings. “Sugar restriction in the first 1,000 days was associated with lower dementia hazards, delayed onset, and more favorable brain-health profiles,” researchers wrote.

“These results highlight the potential importance of early-life nutrition in reducing the risk of dementia decades later,” Zheng stated. For the food and beverage industry, the data adds to mounting pressure to reformulate products aimed at pregnant women and infants.

Zheng emphasized that limiting added sugars during pregnancy and infancy is a beneficial step families and communities can take. However, he stressed that further research remains necessary to fully understand the biological mechanisms linking early sugar exposure to late-life cognitive health.
