AC/DC singer Brian Johnson aborted a £100,000 Newcastle United investment plan
An unrealized 1980s celebrity investment bid for Newcastle United illustrates the long-standing cultural ties between European football and global entertainment figures.
AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson planned to inject £100,000 into Newcastle United during the 1980s, a capital investment that ultimately never materialized despite the backing of club icon Jackie Milburn. The proposed financial intervention coincided with the club's signing of Kevin Keegan, marking an early intersection of global entertainment wealth and English regional football.
While modern European football relies heavily on institutional private equity, the 1980s landscape allowed individual cultural figures to explore direct ownership stakes. Johnson, who had recently purchased property in the Jesmond Dene area of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, approached the investment without seeking personal financial returns.
"I don't want anything out of it," Johnson stated during a Tyne Tees Television interview in his home recreation room. He expressed hesitation about his qualifications, adding, "Who am I to say that I could make a big difference to the team?"
Before the aborted investment, Johnson’s football ambitions were realized on the pitch in 1983. He was recruited for a USA celebrity squad to play an Italian show business XI at Florence’s Stadio Comunale, the home ground of ACF Fiorentina.
Facing a previously unbeaten Italian side in front of 25,000 spectators, the American squad secured a 1-0 victory. The match featured Chuck Norris playing centre-half, though he was ultimately issued a red card.
"He was centre-half and you didn't go near the man – he was dangerous!" Johnson recalled of his teammate. Following the floodlit fixture, legendary Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff presented the AC/DC vocalist with the Man of the Match award.
Although the financial injection never occurred, Johnson’s cultural capital remained tied to the North East club. The singer, who later relocated to Sarasota, Florida, made a cameo in the 2005 football film Goal! The Dream Begins.
His public influence extended into the modern era of the club's commercial and public life. Johnson provided the voiceover for a Newcastle United promotional video released just before the team's EFL Cup victory in 2025, a cultural contribution that fans credited with boosting morale.
