Chilean Miss World contestant brings death metal to global stage
Ignacia Fernández’s performance at the pageant in Vietnam highlights the growing crossover of niche metal genres into mainstream international platforms, with direct implications for European festival circuits.
The Chilean contestant at this year’s Miss World pageant has introduced death metal vocals to the competition’s talent contest. Ignacia Fernández performed at the Khanh Hoa Children's Cultural Palace in Nha Trang, Vietnam, drawing global attention to the intersection of extreme music and mainstream pageants.
Fernández has fronted the Chilean progressive melodic death metal band Decessus since 2020. During the contest, she sang the band’s single The Hollow Descent, which was released last year.
Despite the viral nature of her performance, the judges did not award her a medal. The top positions were instead claimed by Grace Richardson of England, Annaëlle Ibo of Guadeloupe, and Asia Rose Simpson of the Philippines.
"Getting to bring metal to the Miss World stage and share a part of who I am through music was an incredible experience," Fernández said. She congratulated England on winning first place and thanked the organisation and fellow contestants for making the moment special.
For European music markets and festival organisers, the performance underscores a notable commercial shift in booking strategies. Decessus recently made their UK debut at this year’s Download Festival, signaling that niche metal acts are increasingly viable and profitable bookings for major European events.
A music reviewer noted that Fernández "exudes a quiet confidence that screams star quality." The observation compared her precise movements to artists like Gaahl or Maynard James Keenan, "where rabid energy isn't what makes them so captivating." The review concluded that this may not be the last time Decessus performs in the UK.
The band has released five singles to date, including Deliverance, Dying Hope Blossoms, My War Of Pain, The Hollow Descent, and Dark Flames. Their growing international profile demonstrates how unconventional talent can leverage global televised platforms to drive cross-border touring demand and merchandise sales.
The Miss World 2026 pageant will reach its climax on September 5. The current title holder, Thailand's Suchata Chuangsri, is scheduled to crown the victor.
