Russian daytime drone strikes target Ukrainian cities and commercial sites
Intensified daytime attacks on Ukrainian shopping centres, transport and warehouses are escalating the toll on civilian infrastructure, sharpening Kyiv’s demand for European air defence support.
Russia launched a series of increasingly frequent daytime drone and missile attacks across Ukraine on Thursday, killing at least two people and wounding more than a dozen. The coordinated assaults targeted major population centres including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa and the Sumy region.
In Kharkiv, a strike on a shopping centre left one person dead and others injured. Regional governor Oleg Synegoubov shared images of the department store’s charred interior, showing a partially collapsed roof and wall.
Civilian transport and public spaces bore the brunt of this daytime campaign. Three people were injured in a strike on a local bus in Kherson, while three others were wounded in Odesa.
Yaroslav Shanko, head of the Kherson city administration, condemned the timing of the assault. He stated that the enemy attacked civilian transportation in broad daylight while people were simply going about their business.
The capital experienced multiple explosions and repeated air raid alerts throughout the morning. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported four injuries, with two hospitalised, and noted that a drone crashed directly onto a road.
Commuters were forced to take shelter in the metro system, which suspends train crossings over the Dnipro River during air raid alerts. Overnight strikes also continued across the country, with Kyiv region head Tymur Tkachenko confirming that local warehouses were specifically targeted by strike drones and ballistic missiles.
In the northeastern Sumy region, authorities reported one fatality and four additional wounds from the Russian bombardment. Local officials continue to assess the damage to residential areas following the strikes.
Infrastructure and Economic Toll
The deliberate targeting of warehouses, retail spaces and public transport networks highlights the mounting disruption to local economies and civilian supply chains. This escalating pressure on commercial infrastructure underscores the urgent operational need for air defence. Consequently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated his call for allied nations to accelerate the delivery of ballistic missile defence packages to protect these vital assets.
