Millar strike secures Hull victory as Coventry's Premier League wait extends

Substitute Liam Millar scored in the 82nd minute to secure a 1-0 victory for Hull City over Coventry City at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The result marks Hull’s second consecutive Premier League win while extending Coventry’s wait for a top-flight victory to 25 years.

Millar, who replaced Elliot Stroud in the second half, finished a counter-attack after Mohamed Belloumi drove forward and picked him out on the left. The striker made amends for an earlier missed opportunity in the 74th minute, when he dragged a shot wide after being played through by Oli McBurnie.

For Coventry, the defeat represents a missed opportunity in what was viewed as a crucial early-season fixture between the Championship winners and the play-off winners. After falling to Arsenal in their opening match, Lampard's side needed a result to build momentum in their first Premier League home campaign in a quarter of a century.

Manager Frank Lampard’s side controlled possession but lacked a cutting edge in the final third. New signing Taiwo Awoniyi, who scored midweek in a Carabao Cup victory over Plymouth, was twice denied by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis in the first half, including a close-range effort in the 38th minute.

Lampard acknowledged his team’s shortcomings following the match. "I'm disappointed with the result and performance because we had a big share of the ball," he stated, adding that the squad must improve its decisiveness and application of tactical instructions.

Conversely, Hull City are building confidence after following up their opening-day victory against Manchester United with another three points. The away supporters celebrated the result with chants of "we're going to win the league," propelling the club to second place in the early standings.

Hull forward Oli McBurnie emphasized the strategic value of the win against a direct rival. He noted that while the Manchester United match was a "free hit," fixtures against teams around them in the table are far more critical for their end-of-season objectives.

Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic remained grounded despite the traveling fans' optimism. He dismissed the title chants, insisting the squad must stay humble, improve their possession play, and integrate expected new players to refine their system.
