NASA launches $4bn Roman telescope to map universe and test cosmic models
The newly launched observatory will map the cosmos and probe dark matter, providing critical data that complements European space initiatives and could rewrite fundamental physics.
NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope from Florida on Sunday, initiating a multi-year mission to map the cosmos. The observatory lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket at 1:26pm CEST.
Developed over more than a decade at a cost exceeding $4 billion (€3.4bn), the telescope is named after the pioneering astronomer known as the "Mother of Hubble". It will travel to a vantage point 1.5 million kilometres from Earth, a journey expected to take approximately 100 days.
For European scientists and the broader space sector, the mission represents a major complementary effort to the European Space Agency’s Euclid probe. Roman’s observations will work in tandem with European assets to test whether the standard model of the universe remains valid.
The telescope boasts a field of view more than 100 times larger than Hubble’s and significantly wider than the James Webb telescope. It is designed to detect light from billions of years ago, helping researchers investigate dark matter and dark energy, which together constitute roughly 95 per cent of the universe.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman previously stated that the instrument will give the Earth a new atlas of the universe. Roman’s technical manager, Dave Content, noted it will produce the biggest catalogue of astronomical objects ever created to help determine how common solar systems like our own truly are.
Testing the standard model
The sheer volume of data generated will be substantial, with the telescope producing about 1.3 terabytes daily. Content warned that this volume means the data cannot simply be downloaded to a personal laptop, highlighting the massive computational infrastructure required to process and store such astronomical datasets.
Julie McEnery, Roman’s senior project scientist, indicated that recent research suggests existing predictions about the universe’s early expansion may be flawed. She stated the telescope will definitively show whether the standard model works, providing the precision needed to distinguish between competing theories if it does not.
While US President Donald Trump framed the launch as part of "the golden age of America", the scientific community views it as a global inflection point. McEnery expects the most exciting science from Roman to be an unpredicted surprise that will set the stage for future missions.
