Manchester United retains Marcus Rashford as squad stability improves under Carrick

Marcus Rashford is expected to remain at Manchester United after Barcelona declined to activate a £26m transfer fee for the forward. The 28-year-old recently started his first Premier League match in 21 months, featuring prominently in a 5-2 victory over Ipswich at Old Trafford.

His retention marks a shift in the club’s management of human capital under head coach Michael Carrick. Rashford had fallen out of favour under former manager Ruben Amorim, leading to loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona, where his work rate and commitment were heavily scrutinised.

Defender Harry Maguire has publicly backed Rashford’s revival, describing him as a significant asset to the squad. Maguire noted that if the forward remains driven and fit, his presence will be vital, acknowledging that prolonged periods of underperformance at the club inevitably attract intense scrutiny.

Maguire drew parallels to his own experience of losing the captaincy and his starting position under previous management. He emphasised that the club’s broader institutional struggles have created a difficult environment, but noted that Rashford has returned from his time away looking sharp and rejuvenated.

Carrick has reportedly treated Rashford like a new signing, leveraging his existing relationship with the player to restore confidence. This approach mirrors his successful reintegration of midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who also started against Ipswich after being repeatedly overlooked by Amorim and omitted from the World Cup squad by England boss Thomas Tuchel.

Maguire praised Mainoo’s improved off-the-ball work and physical presence since Carrick took charge. He stressed that managing the development of young players through inevitable difficult patches is essential for the club’s long-term stability.

With Rashford’s future secured, the focus shifts to squad restructuring before the transfer window closes on Tuesday. Netherlands forward Joshua Zirkzee is now the most likely senior player to depart, although a proposed loan move to Fiorentina has been cancelled.

A move to Juventus remains a possibility for the 25-year-old, but this is contingent on Canada forward Jonathan David completing a transfer to Atletico Madrid. Zirkzee has been an unused substitute in both of United’s matches so far this season.

Carrick indicated that the club remains open to late additions if the right opportunities emerge. He stated that while time is short, he would not rule out further squad reinforcement following the recent victory.
