Two police officers injured after fatal shooting in Dutch village
Police stormed a quiet Gelderland village in response to the shooting and officials have yet to release details on what triggered the overnight violence.
A person has died and two police officers were injured following a shooting overnight in Overasselt, a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland, police said.
Officers were called to Ewijkseweg street at around 4:20am CET after reports of gunfire. One person was found dead at the scene; the two injured officers were taken to hospital and are "out of danger," a police spokesperson said, according to Dutch public broadcaster, NOS.
Security footage published by Dutch news outlet De Telegraaf showed a large group of masked individuals walking around in the area, some apparently carrying heavy weapons.
Police confirmed multiple arrests overnight, with further detentions made Tuesday morning as the elite tactical unit DSI continued searching the area, firing warning shots, and roads were closed by law enforcement officers.
Officers have not released the victim's identity, cause of death, or confirmed arrest numbers.
According to the local newspaper De Gelderlander, the person killed was a security guard at the home where the shooting took place.
The mayor of the municipality that is 10 kilometres south of Nijmegen, Joerie Minses, told NOS he was horrified by the violence, calling it "completely unacceptable" and saying it "goes beyond all bounds."
He added that his thoughts were first with the victim and injured officers, and that he sympathised with residents "shaken awake by this nighttime violence."
