Newcastle spend £51m on Lille forward Fernandez-Pardo as summer outlay reaches £262m
The Premier League club has restructured its attacking options with a major French acquisition, while offloading last year’s record signing on loan to Juventus to manage squad valuation.
Newcastle United have signed 21-year-old forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille in a deal worth £51m, taking the club’s total summer spending to £262m. The Belgian international has agreed to a long-term contract and will wear the number 20 shirt at St James' Park.
The acquisition marks a significant reallocation of capital for the Premier League side. It follows a summer of heavy roster turnover, with the club reinvesting proceeds from the sales of Sandro Tonali (£100m), Bruno Guimaraes (£75m), and Anthony Gordon (£69.3m) into younger, high-ceiling assets.
Fernandez-Pardo scored eight goals in 29 Ligue 1 appearances for Lille last season and featured in Belgium’s 2026 World Cup squad. Head coach Matthias Jaissle described him as a highly technical player with the explosiveness and courage required for the team's attacking system.
"I spoke to the head coach and he really showed how much he wanted me to be here," Fernandez-Pardo said. "In terms of my own career progression it made complete sense to come, so I didn't hesitate at all."
Squad restructuring and asset management
The arrival of the forward has directly impacted the status of Nick Woltemade. Just one year after joining Newcastle in a club-record £69m deal, Woltemade has been sent to Juventus on a season-long loan.
The Italian club will pay a £3.5m loan fee, but the agreement contains no option or obligation to buy, protecting Newcastle's long-term asset value. Reports indicate that the £51m investment in Fernandez-Pardo increased pressure on Woltemade, leaving no space for him in the current squad.
European football expert Julien Laurens described the move as a smart signing that fits the manager's system, highlighting the player's verticality, pace, and pressing ability. He suggested Fernandez-Pardo could form a strong attacking core alongside Yoane Wissa and Will Osula.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have retained Jacob Murphy, rejecting multiple deadline day offers from Nottingham Forest. The latest bid of £15m was turned down, with the club stating that Jaissle views the winger as key experience in the dressing room.
