Andy Stott fans have been starving. The Manchester producer last served up an album of moody, prismatic electronic music in 2021, with Never The Right Time . Five years later, it's finally the right time to follow it up.
Late Loop , arriving at the end of October, Stott gave himself parameters: no basslines, no reverb, no effects except for a delay unit. The goal was to reset his creative process and end up with songs, not just textures. In that pursuit, the album finds Stott working with a pair of vocalists, new collaborator Elaine Howley and his longtime foil Alison Skidmore. Each song features one of those two singers. The first one we're hearing is "Something In Mind," a Howley spotlight that leans into foggy trip-hop/downtempo textures but is, indisputably and hypnotically, a proper song. Mission accomplished, then?
