O2 Academy Sheffield will reopen in 2027 following major refurbishment

The O2 Academy Sheffield is set to reopen in 2027, four years after it was temporarily shuttered for a major refurbishment.

The venue, on Arundel Gate in Sheffield’s city centre, was initially closed in September 2023 for repairs after issues with its roof. At the time, it was discovered to have areas of unstable reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete in its roof, which BBC News notes is a “lightweight material” susceptible to collapsing.

The material was commonly used in the '60s when the venue was first built, which the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says does not have longevity.

After closing, venue owner and operator Academy Music Group (AMG) invested into the large-scale refurbishment, which included installing a new roof, a plan that was approved by Sheffield City Council last February.

Other improvements included adding air conditioning to the decades-old venue, fitting a new high-quality soundsystem from L-Acoustics, and improving the condition of its main room.

Academy Music Group CEO Liam Boylan says that the O2 Academy Sheffield is an "important venue in the region", and one that promoters and artists will have "missed" since its closure.

"Our venue estate has not been complete without this landmark building and it’s wonderful to be able to announce its return to the group," Boylan added.

Before its temporary closure, The Prodigy played one of their first shows without frontman Keith Flint at the O2 Academy in Sheffield , opening their 2022 ‘Fat Of The Land’ anniversary tour with a two-night stint at the venue.

Speaking on the revamp, Academy Music Group Divisional Manager Justin Smith said: "We want artists who return to play here to have access to the best technical equipment and ensure our audience is given the very best live experience."
