Boxout Fest founder DJ Buxley has died aged 34

Beloved artist and Boxout Fest founder DJ Buxley, real name Ehi Oboite, has died at the age of 34 following a battle with cancer, his family have confirmed.

The news was shared on Instagram on Monday, September 21, alongside a statement written by Oboite before his passing. "I’ve been living with stage four cancer for the last four years; I choose to smile through the pain," he wrote.

"Cancer doesn’t define me... a shock to someone who doesn’t smoke, drink and at 30, this shouldn’t be the battle I was faced with. Unfortunately things haven’t worked out, but I’m here in spirit."

Born in London and later moving to Birmingham for university, Oboite launched the initial concept for his Boxout parties in Digbeth in 2018, bringing together party games and music.

He also launched the community-focused Boxout Jam Sessions in Birmingham, which waived entrance fees and instead asked attendees to bring old clothes for those sleeping rough.

Boxout grew into a festival by 2023, a celebration of Black music and culture showcasing artists from around the world, putting a spotlight on genres including dancehall, Afrobeats and soca.

Oboite is remembered by friends and family as a “charitable” and “humble” person who made a significant impact on the Birmingham music scene, making a sincere effort to prop up those around him.

Per the BBC , Oboite’s close friend Andre 'Dre' Bailey explained: "Buxley believed deeply in Birmingham and its people. He believed the talent was already here. It just needed connection, opportunity and somebody willing to cultivate it."

Oboite’s partner, Yaa Sarah, also spoke in tribute. "Running Boxout together was a huge part of our relationship," she said. "We weren't just partners in life; we were partners in what we were building. We shared the pressure, the late nights, the problems, the wins and the vision."
