Fred again.. speaks out against AI music: “The process is the magic”
The UK artist shared his thoughts in a series of Instagram stories
In a series of Instagram Stories shared today (25th September), the British DJ and producer returned to some thoughts on AI that he had written in his phone’s Notes app a year earlier. “I’ve been thinking for a while, the opposite of AI music maybe isn't human music. It’s making music,” he wrote.
“The process is the magic. I think anyone who’s been lucky enough to make music, or make anything, has been able to feel this in different ways since forever. I think this is maybe why I've felt no pull whatsoever to even try it. I place so much of my identity in that process, and I haven't found that to be a negative place to put it.”
He added that the process of generating ideas and making music is a form of “meditation” for him. “Giving the process bit to a machine would be intrinsically contrary to what I love about the whole thing.”
Concluding his thoughts, Fred again.. wrote: “The clumsy dedicated tumbling towards an idea is the thing we are most lucky to get to do; the hours and hours, and years and years, of endlessly trying to make the thing you wish could exist. There are lots of things I'm worried about AI threatening, but that will never be one.”
His comments echo recent criticism of AI in music from Skrillex and Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter , who have both spoken publicly about their reservations around the technology.
Earlier this month, Fred again.. was revealed as one of the artists contributing to the long-awaited GTA VI soundtrack , teaming up with PinkPantheress , Etienne de Crécy, and CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso on ‘Sexy Magic’.
