Mark McNulty’s In Clubland archives 35 years of UK dance floors

Liverpool photographer Mark McNulty will publish In Clubland: 35 Summers of Love , a 240-page book collecting more than 550 of his photographs of club culture, on November 5 via Modern Sky.

The book opens in 1990 at Quadrant Park, the all-night Liverpool club, and moves through Back to Basics in Leeds, Tresor in Berlin, and the Haçienda in Manchester. It also stops at Cream in Liverpool, the Lakota in Bristol, and Heavenly Social, where Daft Punk and the Chemical Brothers played legendary sets during the club's heyday. McNulty follows the scene into the 2000s, with Garlands, Bugged Out! at Nation, and Club EVOL at EBGB's in Liverpool, plus soul all-nighters in Southport and Creamfields. It closes at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool with the all-female DJ collective Girls Don't Sync.

McNulty was a fixture at all of these locales through the years. A brief stint in a band that shared stages with the Stone Roses, Pulp, and the La's got him guest passes to gigs, festivals, and clubs, and he started using them to take pictures in the mid-'80s. When acid house took hold at the end of the decade, he picked up commissions from The Face and i-D , bringing the North of England's scene to an international readership. Interspersed between the 190 pages of photos are McNulty's own texts contextualizing the times, places, and people of each era.

"My nightclub years are well and truly behind me," McNulty said in a statement. "But people of all ages are still going out at night, and the scenes that we thought were ours have just evolved and changed. The world carries on, and the discotheque most certainly doesn't stop for anybody."

McNulty's photos were previously shown at Liverpool's Open Eye Gallery and at Oriel Colwyn in North Wales, where the 2022 exhibition 35 Summers laid the groundwork for the book. Several of McNulty's photos are also currently on view in the British Culture Archive's contribution to Tate Britain's The 90s: Art & Fashion , alongside work by Damien Hirst and Vivienne Westwood.

In Clubland is the first book from Modern Sky, the independent label and artist management company. It arrives in two limited editions: a hardback run of 100 copies that won't be reprinted, each shipped with a print signed by McNulty, and a first-edition softback run of 303 copies.
