Lab-Grown Leather pivots to T-Rex biomaterial after luxury demand surge

Lab-Grown Leather Ltd is abandoning its traditional synthetic production to focus entirely on a T-Rex collagen biomaterial, signalling a potential shift in how the luxury goods industry sources and markets sustainable alternatives.

Lab-Grown Leather Ltd has completely pivoted its business model to produce a biomaterial derived from fossilised Tyrannosaurus Rex collagen. The company developed the material in collaboration with the agency VML, culminating in a one-of-a-kind luxury handbag revealed in Amsterdam in April.

The strategic shift addresses a major commercial barrier for the emerging lab-grown leather sector. According to VML Global Chief Creative Officer Dimitri Guerassimov, synthetic alternatives have struggled to gain market share because buyers compare them directly to traditional cow leather. This often relegates sustainable alternatives to what Guerassimov described as "a sub-product versus being something on its own."

By sourcing material from a creature extinct for 68 million years, the venture has created a commodity that defies conventional comparison. This unique positioning has proven highly attractive to the market. "The pipeline of possible clients and collaborations is so big that they're going to focus on that," Guerassimov said of the manufacturer's decision to abandon all other ventures. "We're going to scale, and it's going to be a really, really big thing."

A data-driven manufacturing process

Scaling this material required solving a complex biological puzzle using fragments of fossilised collagen recovered from the first T-Rex remains found in Montana. Because parts of the genetic code were missing, researchers relied on AI and computational biology over a two-year period. Guerassimov noted the technology was essential for "AI guessing and reconstituting what's missing, and doing so in the way that's closest possible to what the real thing was," adding that the project had to wait until the technology matured.

The fusion of prehistoric biology and modern AI has already garnered significant industry recognition, picking up four major awards at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The project won Gold, Silver and Bronze Lions across PR, innovation and B2B categories. For investors and luxury brands watching the biomaterial space, the sudden pivot by Lab-Grown Leather Ltd demonstrates that scientific novelty and distinct branding may be necessary to disrupt established animal hide supply chains.
