EU rebukes FIFA over Trump intervention in Balogun ban

EU rebukes FIFA over Trump intervention in Balogun ban

The European Commission has issued a rare rebuke of FIFA after the football body reversed a US player's suspension following a direct intervention by Donald Trump, raising alarms about political interference in sport ahead of a crucial match against Belgium.

FIFA has lifted the automatic one-match suspension of US striker Folarin Balogun, clearing him to play in Monday's last-16 knockout match against Belgium. The governing body's reversal followed a direct call from US President Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, after which Trump thanked Infantino for "reversing a great injustice."

Balogun originally received a straight red card after a video review showed him stepping on a Bosnian defender's foot during a round-of-32 win. Under FIFA rules, a straight red card triggers a mandatory one-game ban with no avenue for appeal by the national team. FIFA stunned fans on Sunday by announcing the ban would instead be suspended for a year.

The move has drawn an unusually direct response from the European Commission, which rarely intervenes in football disputes. A Commission spokesperson stated that while the EU respects the autonomy of sports federations, participation decisions must rely on "objective, transparent criteria." The spokesperson added: "We support the principle of fair play and transparent competition."

Glenn Micaleff, the European Commissioner for sports, went further by labelling the reversal the "wrong decision." Writing on social media, he stressed that decisions on sporting rules "belong to sporting bodies, not politicians." He warned that external influence "would undermine the autonomy of sport" and highlighted the "weaponisation of sport for political purposes."

The outrage has dominated the news cycle in Belgium, where the Commission is headquartered, ahead of the match against the Belgian Red Devils. European football's governing body, UEFA, described FIFA's move as "unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable." The Belgian Football Federation has escalated the dispute by launching a formal challenge to Balogun's eligibility.

The Belgian federation accused FIFA of ignoring its "legitimate requests" for clarity. It argued that the governing body created a procedural appeal process that was "immediately" declared inadmissible. This effectively shut down formal opposition to the US player's reinstatement on the pitch.

For European officials, the core issue extends beyond a single football match. It centres on the credibility of international regulatory frameworks when subjected to direct political pressure from heads of state.
