Mayor confirms Swift paid $160,000 for NYC wedding permit

Mayor confirms Swift paid $160,000 for NYC wedding permit

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has confirmed that Taylor Swift paid over $160,000 for a city permit covering police and logistical costs for her Madison Square Garden wedding, ending a public debate over who should foot the bill for the high-security event.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce paid over $160,000 to secure a municipal permit for their wedding at Madison Square Garden earlier this month. Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed the figure during a consumer protection press conference on Thursday. He stated the fee covered both the street closures and the city's operational response to the event, noting the permit was finalized just days before the ceremony.

The payment resolves a weeks-long public dispute over who should bear the financial burden of securing a high-profile event in a busy commercial district. The couple's decision to shut down several Midtown streets drew sharp criticism from local politicians. They had called on Swift and Kelce to reimburse the New York City Police Department and taxpayers for the overtime costs incurred during the massive security operation.

Mamdani's clarification indicates the city structured the permit fee specifically to capture these public costs. When asked by a reporter whether Swift would repay the police department, the mayor said she "has paid already the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event."

While the $160,000 covers municipal logistics, the broader economic footprint of the wedding was significantly larger. Ahead of the ceremony, Swift and Kelce directed $26 million to 20 charities across the United States. The event itself functioned as a major draw for the hospitality and security sectors, requiring extensive coordination to manage the influx of high-net-worth individuals into the Manhattan venue.

That guest list included prominent figures from the transatlantic entertainment industry, such as Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Ed Sheeran, Bradley Cooper, and Zoë Kravitz. Others in attendance included Lena Dunham, Hugh Grant, Dakota Johnson, and Julianne Moore. The concentration of global celebrities in a single Midtown block required the heavy police presence that prompted the initial political backlash.

Swift’s publicist, Tree Paine, confirmed the couple opted for a streamlined wedding party rather than a large bridal suite. Swift's brother Austin Swift served as her Man of Honour, while Jason Kelce stood as his brother's Best Man. Actor Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony, which also featured musical performances alongside the festivities.
