Mac Allister contract stand poses Liverpool transfer dilemma

Mac Allister contract stand poses Liverpool transfer dilemma

Alexis Mac Allister's standout World Cup form has highlighted a looming financial decision for Liverpool in a transfer market where midfielder valuations are climbing sharply.

Alexis Mac Allister remains on the five-year contract he signed upon joining Liverpool from Brighton for £35m in 2023, leaving him with two seasons remaining. Despite teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch securing new deals, the Argentine is not in active discussions for an extension or a transfer away from Anfield.

This impasse presents a commercial dilemma for the club as midfielder market values rise. Keeping a player without extending his deal risks a scenario similar to last summer, when Liverpool allowed Luis Diaz to leave for Bayern Munich. Selling now would mean cashing in during an inflated market, but it would require replacing a proven winner just as a new manager takes over.

Mac Allister's recent performances for Argentina at the World Cup have underlined his enduring value. He has played 539 minutes, applied high pressure 208 times and scored in the quarter-final against Switzerland. His versatility appeals to incoming head coach Andoni Iraola, whose direct, high-press system demands "all action" midfielders. "I feel like maybe the number eight position, also double number six (double pivot), is my best position, but I can play anywhere," Mac Allister told ESPN.

However, the 27-year-old is coming off the poorest of his three Liverpool campaigns, a season hampered by early injury problems. Furthermore, FIFA regulations grant World Cup participants at least three weeks off. If Argentina reaches the final this weekend, Mac Allister will not return to club duty until August 10 at the earliest, leaving him unlikely to be match-fit for the Premier League's opening weeks.

Crucial to his future is whether Iraola can replicate the success of previous managers. Mac Allister shared a close bond with Jürgen Klopp and previously described Arne Slot as the "perfect bridge". "It's not just football. This is not just a club - it's our family. It's our memories, our legacy... and we have to cherish it, because we don't know how long it will last," he told The Players Tribune. "It's always about winning," Mac Allister said after the Switzerland victory, a mindset Liverpool will hope he brings back to Merseyside.
