Arsenal sell Trossard to Besiktas for £17m as wing overhaul begins

Premier League champions Arsenal have sold 31-year-old Leandro Trossard to Besiktas for £17m, a move that allows the club to recoup most of its original investment before his contract expires and signals an impending rebuild of its left flank.

Arsenal have confirmed the permanent transfer of Leandro Trossard to Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas for a fee of £17m.

The deal is structured as an initial payment of £15.3m, with a further £1.7m tied to performance-related add-ons. The Belgian winger departs the Premier League champions with just one year remaining on his current contract.

From a financial standpoint, the transaction represents a disciplined piece of asset management. Arsenal paid Brighton & Hove Albion £27m to acquire Trossard in January 2023. By moving him on now at the age of 31, the club recoups the majority of its original capital outlay rather than risking losing him for nothing in twelve months.

Trossard provided a strong return on that initial investment. In three and a half years in north London, he made 174 appearances across all competitions, scoring 36 goals and providing 34 assists. His output was notably reliable in high-pressure moments; 17 of his 27 Premier League goals for the club either drew Arsenal level or put them ahead.

That dependability was central to Arsenal's recent success. During last season's title-winning campaign, Trossard scored eight goals and registered 11 assists in 50 matches. He also played a significant role as the club finished as runners-up in the Champions League.

However, the economics of elite European football dictate that selling a player entering his thirties in the final year of his contract is the optimal time to maximise transfer value. Trossard's departure is not merely a routine squad clearance, but the opening move in a deliberate overhaul of Arsenal's left wing.

That reconstruction may extend beyond Trossard. Gabriel Martinelli, the other primary option on that flank, is also entering the final two years of his contract, which expires in the summer of 2027. Arsenal could therefore begin next season with an entirely new setup on the left side of their attack.

The capital recovered from the Trossard sale will be redirected towards younger, high-value targets. Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers is understood to be Arsenal's priority target for the position. PSG's Bradley Barcola has also been identified as a potential first-choice acquisition.

Should they look further down the market, Arsenal have scouted Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis. Securing the Greek international would require a fee in the region of £34m, which would represent a new record for the Belgian Pro League.

"Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Leo for his valued contribution to the club and wish him all the best for his future," an Arsenal statement said.
