England cricket seeks new Test coach to fix discipline and replace Stokes

England must appoint a new Test cricket coach capable of restoring discipline, finding a captain and replacing Ben Stokes after a series of off-field scandals and poor results ended the Brendon McCullum era.

Brendon McCullum has been sacked as England’s Test coach and Ben Stokes has retired mid-match, bringing an abrupt end to the high-risk "Bazball" era. The cricketing authority now faces a complex management task to salvage its flagship red-ball team ahead of a home Ashes series next summer.

The immediate priority is appointing a new captain. Harry Brook is the frontrunner after guiding England to the top of the T20I rankings, but his off-field conduct raises doubts. Brook was fined £30,000 following a nightclub incident in New Zealand and was overlooked for a temporary leadership role during the recent Oval Test against New Zealand. Alternatives are scarce, leaving Joe Root or the untested Jacob Bethell as the primary options.

A fractured coaching structure

The new coach will not have sole control over the squad. McCullum remains in post as the white-ball coach, creating a structural dynamic that requires careful management. There is a potential tug-of-war over Brook’s availability across formats, with McCullum warning there will be "robust" conversations to "achieve harmony and success" for English cricket.

Beyond tactics, the incoming coach must address a deepening discipline crisis. England have suffered a string of drink-related incidents, including Brook’s scrap in New Zealand, Ben Duckett’s intoxicated beach break in Noosa during the Ashes, and a curfew-breaking nightspot trip by Stokes and Gus Atkinson in Chelsea. This lack of professionalism extended to match preparation, with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick admitting there were no discussions about adjusting shot selection to suit Australian pitches.

Replacing a talisman

On the field, filling the void left by Stokes requires a strategic choice between seam-bowling all-rounder Sam Curran and spin option Rehan Ahmed. The core of the batting lineup appears settled around Jacob Bethell, Root and Brook, though the second opening spot and the wicketkeeper role remain areas of scrutiny after Jamie Smith’s lean Ashes.

McCullum’s departure also leaves spinner Shoaib Bashir without the two men who championed his selection. The new coach will likely demand more tangible results from the squad. Ultimately, the appointment will be judged on one metric: reversing a run of just three wins in 12 Tests and finally securing a series victory over Australia or India.
