Fenerbahce signs Greenwood for 39m euros ahead of UCL bid

Fenerbahce signs Greenwood for 39m euros ahead of UCL bid

Turkish side Fenerbahce has acquired forward Mason Greenwood from Marseille for €39m, triggering a lucrative sell-on clause for Manchester United as the club pushes for Champions League qualification.

Fenerbahce has signed English forward Mason Greenwood from Marseille on a four-year contract. The Turkish club stated the transfer fee is €39m, although it had previously advised the total fee would amount to €45m. The acquisition marks a significant outlay for the Istanbul-based side as it seeks to convert domestic consistency into European success.

The deal highlights the rapid turnover and profit potential in the European transfer market. Marseille signed Greenwood from Manchester United in July 2024 for £26.6m. Offloading him less than a year later allows the French club to secure a straight capital gain on the asset.

Manchester United is also positioned to benefit substantially from the cross-border transaction. When United sold the academy product last summer, the club stated it had negotiated a "sizeable sell-on fee", which is understood to be around 40%. This clause means United will receive a multi-million euro payout from Fenerbahce's purchase without having held the player on its books for the past year.

Fenerbahce's willingness to spend comes at a critical juncture in its season. The club finished second in the Turkish Super Lig for the fifth successive season. It will now face Polish side Gornik Zabrze in the second qualifying round of the Champions League this month, a tie that will determine whether this heavy financial investment pays off.

The signing was heavily tied to the club's internal politics. Before the presidential elections at the beginning of June, both winning candidate Aziz Yildirim and his rival Hakan Safi made their interest in Greenwood known. Delivering the forward became a key early objective for the new administration.

On the pitch, Greenwood brings a proven scoring record. He scored 48 goals in 81 appearances across all competitions for Marseille. He finished joint-second in the 2025-26 Ligue 1 golden boot standings with 16 goals, trailing only Rennes' Esteban Lepaul.

"Hello Fenerbahce family, thank you so much for the support you have shown me. I am very happy to be here," Greenwood said. The forward moved to France after a loan spell at Spanish outfit Getafe. He left United permanently after an internal inquiry ruled out his return, despite charges of attempted rape and assault against him being dropped in February 2023.
