Palace sign England as WSL newcomers back women's investment

Newly promoted Crystal Palace have signed decorated striker Bethany England, signalling the club's continued financial investment in establishing a competitive women's team in the top flight.

Newly promoted Women's Super League side Crystal Palace have signed striker Bethany England on a two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months. The 32-year-old former Tottenham captain arrives as a free agent after her contract expired this summer. She will wear the number nine shirt for the London club.

The acquisition represents a clear statement of intent from Palace regarding their financial commitment to the women's side. After suffering relegation from the WSL in 2025, the club secured an immediate return to the top tier by finishing as runners-up in the second division last season. Backing that rapid bounce-back with a high-profile signing underscores a strategic push to solidify their top-flight status.

England brings a wealth of top-flight experience to a newly promoted squad. She has scored 87 WSL goals across her career, including 32 for Tottenham, a record that makes her their all-time top scorer in the league. During a highly successful seven-year spell at Chelsea, she lifted four WSL titles, two Women's FA Cups, and two Women's League Cups.

Her pedigree also extends to the international stage. England was a key member of the Lionesses squad that won Euro 2022 and finished as runners-up in the 2023 Women's World Cup. For Palace, securing a player with such a consistent track record of trophy success is aimed at preventing a second relegation in three years.

The striker directly linked her move to the club's evident financial backing. "Palace are an ambitious club. They've been in the WSL before, they've had two amazing promotions now, and I think you can see their investment in the women's game," England said.

She also pointed to the club's physical infrastructure as evidence of their long-term planning. "They're really pushing to be among the best, and they've got amazing facilities. It's a place where I hope that I can make a lot of good memories, score a lot of goals, and make some history for the football club."

Manager Jo Potter framed the arrival as a crucial piece of the club's top-flight survival strategy. "We are absolutely delighted to have Bethany here at Palace. She has scored goals wherever she has gone, and I am sure she will be crucial for us next season."

"It feels great to sign for Crystal Palace. I'm very excited to be here, and I'm looking forward to meeting all the girls and getting started," England added.
