CD sales surge 16% as mass retailers capture physical music market

CD sales have overtaken vinyl growth in the first half of 2026, signaling a major shift in physical music retail that hands big-box stores a growing share of a multi-million unit market.

Compact disc sales surged 16% to 16.3 million units in the first half of 2026, easily outpacing vinyl’s 2.4% growth, according to Luminate’s 2026 Midyear Report. The data marks a decisive shift in the physical music revival, moving the industry's focus beyond the vinyl resurgence of the past decade.

The format's unexpected comeback is heavily driven by K-pop collector culture. While BTS’s album ARIRANG was a major catalyst, the trend extends to acts like ENHYPEN and ATEEZ. Their deluxe packaging and exclusive editions have helped mass-market retailers like Target and Walmart capture nearly 30% of the physical album market, posting the biggest gains of the period.

The strength of the CD market is not entirely reliant on a single genre. Stripping out BTS and the wider K-pop catalog from the data reveals underlying CD growth of 6.7% year over year. Total physical album sales in the US reached 38.2 million units, a 7.8% increase encompassing CDs, LPs, and cassettes.

This shift carries significant implications for the music retail sector and supply chains. Independent record stores still account for the majority of physical sales, but their dominance is being eroded by corporate chains capitalizing on merchandise-driven album releases. For investors and music executives, the data suggests physical music is no longer just a niche indie market but a scalable retail commodity. The success of premium packaging proves consumers will pay retail margins for physical goods in an era of streaming.

Underpinning this broader physical boom is a striking change in generational consumer behavior. Luminate found that 60% of Gen Z listeners now predominantly listen to music from the 1990s or earlier, a massive jump from 18% in 2021. This demographic shift toward nostalgia, combined with a desire to own tangible artist merchandise, is transforming CDs from late-1990s relics into modern collectibles.

The appetite for retro formats extends beyond CDs. Earlier this year, Maxell introduced a Bluetooth cassette player, reinforcing how nostalgia-fueled physical media continues to create new product categories for electronics and music companies alike.
