Apple plans October OLED iPad mini as component costs rise

Apple plans October OLED iPad mini as component costs rise

Apple is preparing its first major iPad mini update in five years for an October release, a move that will test whether the company can navigate ongoing global memory chip shortages while pushing its tablet revenue toward $30 billion.

Apple is planning to release an OLED-equipped iPad mini by October, according to people familiar with the matter. The device, codenamed J510, would represent the most significant overhaul for the compact tablet since a design change in 2021. It is expected to feature an A19 Pro chip, upgrading from the A17 Pro processor in the current generation.

Rather than using the premium LTPO technology found in the iPad Pro, the new mini will utilize an LTPS OLED panel locked at a 60 hertz refresh rate. This hardware choice reflects a balancing act for Apple: upgrading screen technology across the lineup while managing rising component costs. The transition to OLED will almost certainly push the retail price of the mini higher.

Pricing dynamics are a central concern for investors tracking Apple's margins. Apple already raised the starting price of the current mini to $599 from $499 in June, a direct response to a global memory chip shortage. That same shortage has disrupted Mac and iPad production throughout the year. It remains an open question whether Apple can successfully manufacture and ship the new OLED mini by October under these ongoing constraints.

Despite these supply chain pressures, Apple’s tablet business remains a reliable growth engine. iPad revenue is projected to grow six percent to nearly $30 billion this fiscal year. Sustaining that momentum requires Apple to refresh its hardware without alienating buyers through aggressive price hikes.

The broader product roadmap shows Apple moving cautiously with its lower-tier tablets. An updated entry-level iPad, codenamed J581, is being tested for early 2027 but will retain an LCD screen and receive only a faster processor. New 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air models are planned for spring 2027. Redesigned iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models are also slated for 2027, indicating a major hardware refresh cycle down the line.

The mini's October target date places it just weeks after what is expected to be a crowded September product launch. Apple is preparing to unveil a foldable iPhone, the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, new Apple Watch models, and updated Macs. The foldable iPhone is expected to start at around $2,000 and feature a roughly eight-inch screen when opened. This leaves the iPad mini as Apple's most affordable route to a large portable display, assuming the new OLED panel does not price it out of that market segment.
