Beehiiv adds chat, AI tools as newsletter platforms chase revenue

Beehiiv is adding in-app chat forums and an AI assistant to help publishers retain audiences and boost advertising revenue in an increasingly competitive digital media market.

Beehiiv has launched a feature called Community that allows newsletter subscribers to communicate directly with each other within the platform. The company is simultaneously rolling out an AI assistant, dubbed Copilot, designed to help publishers manage and expand their audiences.

The move represents a shift away from fragmented digital publishing ecosystems. Until now, writers frequently routed their audiences to external applications like Discord, Slack, or Facebook groups to foster discussion. By internalizing these forums, Beehiiv aims to keep readers on its own platform. Creators can also establish paid membership tiers for exclusive access to specific chatrooms, creating a direct revenue stream.

“People following your content have a shared interest in what you’re creating, but they can’t communicate with each other. Whether that interest is in sports, the World Cup, or politics, being able to have a community where your audience can actually engage with one another is super valuable,” Beehiiv CEO Tyler Denk said.

Retaining users is central to Beehiiv’s broader push to become a comprehensive creator platform. The company recently added podcasts, webinars, and customizable paywalls, noting that half of its podcast users have migrated their shows from competing services. These engagement tools are designed to support a growing suite of monetization options.

Publishers can now utilize programmatic advertising to sell ad slots automatically, selecting options that offer the highest returns based on their specific readership and performance. This complements existing tools like metered paywalls, paid trials, and a sponsorship storefront. Publishers on the platform currently earn more than $1 million per month through Beehiiv’s ad network.

The new Copilot tool analyzes data across newsletters and podcasts to offer growth strategies, draft outreach campaigns, and identify new revenue opportunities. Earlier this year, Beehiiv also launched a model context protocol server to integrate with external AI models like ChatGPT and Claude, and it is developing Answer Engine Optimization to increase visibility in AI search results. A redesigned editor displaying editing and preview modes side by side was also shipped.

These updates arrive as the independent publishing sector becomes increasingly crowded. Competitors are rapidly expanding their own toolkits, with Substack launching a built-in recording studio in March and Riverside introducing newsletter publishing features last month.
