Financial gulf leaves Celtic priced out by English Championship
Celtic's chief executive has admitted the club is being outbid by English second-tier sides in the transfer market, highlighting a growing financial disparity that threatens their European competitiveness.
Celtic has made just one summer signing, Colombian forward Camilo Duran. Chief executive Michael Nicholson has conceded the defending Scottish Premiership champions are struggling to compete financially with English Championship clubs.
Speaking at a supporters' meeting in Cork on 4 July, Nicholson cited "the difficulty in dealing with agents, competing with the Premier League and even the Championship" as the primary reasons for the stalled recruitment. The comments were recorded in minutes published online by the Association of Irish Celtic Supporters Clubs.
To navigate this financial disparity, the club is actively pursuing out-of-contract players and shifting its recruitment model. Manager Martin O'Neill emphasized a focus on younger talent, stating they have "better drive, ambition and are more suited to Celtic because they can be developed and aren't swayed as much by wages."
The lack of transfer activity has created significant tension. Former manager Brendan Rodgers spoke extensively about his frustration over a lack of additions before his departure. O'Neill has reportedly echoed these concerns, telling the Celtic board that despite winning a domestic league and cup double last term, the current squad is not strong enough and is in "major need of signings."
Nicholson framed the cautious spending within a newly finalized long-term corporate strategy. The club's defined objectives, he explained, are "to be the best club in Scotland, to be financially sound, and to compete in Europe." Achieving financial stability while attempting to close the gap on wealthier European rivals requires strict cost control, a difficult balance when lower-tier English clubs can offer higher wages.
The immediate on-pitch results have done little to reassure a restless fanbase that perceived a lack of spending last season. Pre-season friendly results, including a 4-1 loss to Sporting and a 1-1 draw against Shelbourne, have highlighted the squad's current limitations. Celtic face Middlesbrough and AC Milan before their competitive campaign begins against Dundee on 3 August. The only other squad addition is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who extended his short-term deal.
