Glasner appointed at Forest as club shifts to targeted transfer spending

Oliver Glasner has become Nottingham Forest's fourth manager in less than a year, taking charge of a club that is pivoting from heavy spending to a targeted recruitment strategy to meet its owner's trophy demands.

Oliver Glasner has signed a three-year contract to become Nottingham Forest's head coach, marking the club's fourth managerial appointment since September. The Austrian arrives after guiding Crystal Palace to the FA Cup and Europa Conference League, fulfilling owner Evangelos Marinakis's demand for a manager with a winning pedigree.

His appointment follows a turbulent 12 months for the East Midlands club. Nuno Espirito Santo departed last August, Ange Postecoglou was sacked after just 39 days, Sean Dyche lasted 114 days, and Vitor Pereira was dismissed two minutes before a termination clause expired in June.

This volatility mirrors a broader trend in English football, where a League Managers Association study found the average tenure of sacked Premier League managers has fallen below one year, down from over three years in 2021-22. Across the English leagues, 43 managers were sacked last season, a 2% increase, with 65 total managerial movements representing a 12% rise.

Glasner acknowledged the precarious nature of the industry but downplayed the personal risk. "I never sign and think about getting sacked," he said. "I just think: 'OK, what do we have to do to bring success to the club?'"

Forest's off-pitch strategy is also undergoing a clear recalibration. The club has ruled out a repeat of last summer's 13-player, £180m spending spree, prioritising quality over quantity. This shift is already evident in the market: Elliot Anderson was sold to Manchester City in a record-breaking deal, Nicolas Dominguez has been brought in to replace him, and the club is pursuing specific targets like Tottenham's Lucas Bergvall.

Further recruitment is required following the departures of goalkeepers Stefan Ortega and Angus Gunn, while a striker is needed to support Chris Wood, who turns 35 in December. Glasner, who admitted his impatience is both a strength and a weakness, expects the market to accelerate after the World Cup and anticipates new arrivals joining the squad at a training camp in Portugal next week.
