Signed leather jacket worn by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang sells for $960,000
A signed leather jacket worn by Nvidia’s chief executive has fetched nearly a million dollars at auction, underscoring the immense cultural and financial capital generated by the artificial intelligence boom.
A signed black Tom Ford leather jacket worn by Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang sold for $960,000 at a Sotheby’s auction on Friday. The final price was driven by 65 bids from 45 collectors, shattering the pre-sale estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.
The garment, which retails for just under $10,000, was originally worn by Huang at a Foxconn event in Taipei in 2023 before being signed for the auction. Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles, stated, “The response to this sale surpassed even our highest expectations.”
This transaction highlights how the artificial intelligence boom is generating wealth at a scale that transforms a corporate leader’s everyday wardrobe into a highly sought-after collectible asset class. Selling a garment for 96 times its retail value reflects the unique cultural and financial status bestowed upon Huang, driven directly by Nvidia’s staggering $4.86 trillion market capitalisation.
Huang has deliberately cultivated this specific founder’s uniform for nearly two decades, consistently choosing leather jackets for major product launches, trade shows, and company events. The garments have become so iconic within the technology sector that Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg traded garments with Huang in a “jersey swap” in 2024. Zuckerberg later received one of these jackets on stage at a computer graphics conference, remarking, “This is worth more because it’s used.”
The intense market fervour surrounding Nvidia’s leadership stands in stark contrast to the broader technology industry. Although Apple recently overtook Nvidia as the world’s most valuable company, there is no comparable secondary market or cultural appetite for auctioning the everyday attire of its chief executive, Tim Cook.
All proceeds from Friday’s high-profile sale will be directed to the Edge Institute. This nonprofit organisation is dedicated to supporting future innovation through the provision of fellowships, grants, and residencies.
