Ex-Spain star Capdevila denied US entry over past Iran trip

Ex-Spain star Capdevila denied US entry over past Iran trip

A 2010 World Cup winner faces missing the Spain-Argentina final after US visa rules penalized a decade-old exhibition match in Tehran, exposing strict travel barriers for European citizens.

Joan Capdevila, a defender on Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad, has publicly appealed to Donald Trump to secure entry into the United States for Sunday’s final against Argentina. His request for visa-free travel through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) was denied.

The rejection stems from a trip Capdevila took to Tehran a decade ago to play in a La Liga legends exhibition match against Iranian all-stars. US State Department regulations automatically disqualify travelers from visa waiver countries from using ESTA if they have visited Iran at any point after March 1, 2011.

Facing the prospect of watching the New Jersey final from afar, the 48-year-old took to X on Friday night. "I NEED HELP @realDonaldTrump!" Capdevila posted, expressing his desire to join his former 2010 teammates in supporting the current Spanish squad. He also directed a message to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and tagged the Spanish government’s sports ministry.

For European citizens and the broader travel ecosystem, the incident highlights the rigid, long-lasting consequences of US immigration enforcement. The blanket geographic bans tied to past travel history are a known friction point in transatlantic relations. They routinely complicate the ability of European business travelers, academics, and now athletes, to move freely despite their countries being part of the visa waiver program.

Capdevila is a prominent figure in European public life, having also won the 2008 European Championship. That a celebrated sports icon must appeal directly to the US president and the secretary of state underscores the lack of discretionary avenues available when rigid border systems trigger a denial. The State Department offers no standard waivers for historic exhibition matches.

The US Department of Homeland Security, which runs the ESTA program, has been asked for comment. Unless an intervention is made, Capdevila remains subject to the requirement that anyone who has visited Iran must obtain a standard visa prior to traveling, a process unlikely to conclude before Sunday's match.
