Chelsea have paid a club-record £117m to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, signalling a heavily funded reset under new manager Xabi Alonso after a disappointing 10th-place finish.
Chelsea have signed Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m on a seven-year contract, making the 23-year-old England international the club’s record acquisition. The deal, agreed on Saturday, saw Chelsea intercept a transfer that Arsenal had appeared poised to complete.
This transfer is one of the most significant investments of BlueCo’s four-year ownership. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali signalled a strategic shift towards the end of last season, after the team finished 10th and were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16. Securing a versatile forward like Rogers is the clearest evidence yet that the club intends to target players capable of helping them challenge for the title.
A key driver of the deal was the appointment of Xabi Alonso, hired partly to convince the right calibre of player to move to Stamford Bridge. Rogers, who helped England secure a World Cup bronze medal with a 6-4 victory over France on Saturday, confirmed the manager's influence. “I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading,” he told the club's website.
Rogers has experienced a rapid ascent since joining Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024, scoring 31 goals in 125 appearances under Unai Emery. He satisfies Chelsea’s need for a player who can operate across multiple attacking roles.
The arrival of Rogers is the fourth addition of a busy summer, following defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha and winger Geovany Quenda. It is arguably the biggest deal the club have pulled off since Cole Palmer moved from Manchester City in 2023.
The record outlay on Rogers contrasts with the club's approach to older assets. In June, Chelsea failed in an attempt to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland because they were unwilling to meet the Black Cats' valuation for a player who will turn 34 in September. The Rogers deal shows a clear preference for younger players secured on long seven-year contracts.
