Jermain Defoe has left his position as manager of Woking FC after just 116 days, highlighting the fragile internal dynamics of English lower-league football clubs. The former England striker and the National League side mutually agreed to part ways on Thursday, exactly two weeks before their season opener against Sutton United.
Defoe took charge in March, winning two of his six league matches to guide the club to a 10th-placed finish. His ninth and final game in charge was a 1-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Braintree Town on Tuesday. Despite the brief tenure, the 43-year-old’s appointment had a tangible impact on the club's recruitment strategy. Woking's supporters were energized, and several summer signings explicitly chose to join the squad because of Defoe's name and reputation.
However, his abrupt exit points to a breakdown in the club's off-pitch governance. Defoe's public statement thanked owner Todd Johnson for the opportunity but notably omitted director of football Jody Brown. Because Brown and Defoe had jointly assembled the current playing squad, this omission suggests a structural clash between the manager and the club's sporting hierarchy.
For a club operating outside the lucrative top tiers of English football, this level of sudden instability carries significant commercial risk. Woking must now urgently find a new head coach while managing a roster of players who were recruited specifically to play under the departed manager.
"Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position," Defoe said on Instagram. He described the stint as an "eye-opening managerial experience" where he felt the club was "building something special."
Before retiring in 2022 with 305 goals in 763 senior appearances, Defoe had only brief coaching stints at Rangers and Tottenham's academy. This departure at Woking disrupts what was meant to be his breakthrough into full-time management.
