Midjourney buys Co-Star to push into consumer apps

Midjourney buys Co-Star to push into consumer apps

Midjourney has acquired the social astrology app Co-Star, a surprise move that provides the AI lab with the consumer app expertise needed to break free from its reliance on Discord.

Midjourney, the artificial intelligence laboratory known for its LLM-powered image and video generators, has acquired the social astrology application Co-Star. The financial terms of the transaction remain undisclosed.

Co-Star brings a substantial consumer base to the deal, boasting approximately 4.3 million monthly active users. The application allows individuals to determine their astrological birth charts and share them directly with friends. To produce its horoscopes, compatibility assessments, and personalized advice, the platform relies on a blended approach of artificial intelligence and human writers.

The acquisition represents a notable strategic shift for Midjourney. Despite its prominent position in the generative AI sector, the company has historically lacked its own standalone consumer application. Its tools remain almost entirely synonymous with its Discord server, forcing users to navigate a third-party messaging platform to access the core technology.

This dependency creates a significant bottleneck for user growth and limits the company's ability to control the consumer experience. By bringing Co-Star's two dozen employees onto its payroll, Midjourney is primarily acquiring proven expertise in building and scaling native mobile applications. For a company that has yet to launch its own standalone app, this specialized talent pool addresses a critical operational gap.

Diversifying beyond the chatbot

The move also highlights an increasingly eclectic product strategy at Midjourney. The AI lab is not merely attempting to build a standalone application; it is simultaneously developing a medical arm and a spa. Adding an astrology platform to a portfolio that includes healthcare and wellness initiatives suggests Midjourney is laying the groundwork to become a diversified technology company.

Operating exclusively through a Discord server remains an unusual limitation for a major AI player. Competitors in the generative AI space have increasingly prioritized native mobile experiences to capture broader audiences. Securing a dedicated consumer app development team is an essential step if Midjourney intends to compete for mainstream market share.

For investors and competitors tracking the generative AI market, the acquisition signals that the next phase of sector growth will be defined by platform independence. AI companies that currently rely on external interfaces are actively seeking direct-to-consumer channels. Midjourney’s pivot, facilitated by the Co-Star team, indicates that the race to capture everyday users is decisively moving into dedicated mobile ecosystems.
