Four Women Accuse Jared Leto of Criminal Sexual Misconduct in New Documentary
A new documentary details criminal sexual misconduct allegations against the actor and musician, renewing scrutiny over accountability and the use of non-disclosure agreements in the entertainment industry.
Four women have accused actor and musician Jared Leto of criminal sexual conduct, according to a new documentary currently airing on a major UK broadcaster. The alleged offences reportedly occurred when the accusers were teenagers.
The claims include allegations of sexual assault in a motel bathroom when one woman was 17, and another being threatened with assault at 19 in a hotel room. A third woman described having under-age sex with Leto in California at 17, stating he dismissed her concerns about the state’s age of consent.
A fourth woman alleged she was groomed through repeated sexually explicit phone calls starting at age 16. She stated that Leto’s representatives later sent her a non-disclosure agreement to prevent her from discussing the relationship, which she refused to sign.
In total, ten women spoke to the documentary about encounters spanning from 2002 to 2016, with nine sharing their stories publicly for the first time. The documentary makers stated they have corroborated multiple accounts with friends and family, and have reviewed supporting pictures and messages.
Two men who previously worked with his band, Thirty Seconds To Mars, reported that staff felt uncomfortable with his interactions with teenage girls. They alleged he would routinely invite them backstage or to his recording house.
The documentary makers noted that despite repeated attempts to contact Leto regarding these specific allegations, he has not responded. This follows a report published last June, in which nine women accused him of inappropriate behaviour dating back to the early 2000s.
At that time, a representative for Leto "expressly denied" the accusations, including a 2012 account from a Los Angeles-based DJ alleging assault when she was 17. The representative stated that the claims were "demonstrably false".
