KuCoin Nigeria Limited has received conditional Approval-in-Principle (AIP) from the Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigeria (SEC Nigeria), for admission into its Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme (ARIP). It advances the exchange’s efforts to establish a regulated presence in one of Africa’s most active digital asset markets.

According to Chainalysis’ 2026 Global Crypto Adoption Index , Nigeria ranks third worldwide in overall cryptocurrency adoption. It ranks behind Brazil and the United States.

The country also leads in domestic peer-to-peer cryptocurrency activity and cross-border crypto flows. That shows its growing role in international digital asset transactions.

Nigeria’s position reflects the importance of digital assets in financial transfers and direct transactions between users. That makes regulatory engagement increasingly relevant as the market develops.

KuCoin Nigeria’s conditional approval marks an initial step in that process. The AIP does not constitute a final licence, registration, endorsement or recommendation from SEC Nigeria.

Nor does it authorise the company to commence operations, onboard customers or provide services to the Nigerian public.

During the review, KuCoin Nigeria presented its proposed business and operational framework to the regulator.

The demonstration covered planned products and services, customer onboarding procedures, fiat on- and off-ramp arrangements, technology infrastructure, and governance and risk management systems.

The development forms part of KuCoin’s broader regulatory strategy across international markets. In Australia, KuCoin operates through Axis One Markets Pty Ltd. That entity is registered with AUSTRAC as a digital currency exchange provider.

These authorisations and registrations apply exclusively to their respective entities and jurisdictions. They do not permit KuCoin Nigeria to operate in Nigeria.

“Receiving conditional Approval-in-Principle from SEC Nigeria marks another important milestone in KuCoin’s global compliance journey. As digital assets become an increasingly important part of the global financial system, trust must be built through continuously strengthening governance, maintaining high compliance standards and enhancing user protection. We value the opportunity to engage constructively with SEC Nigeria through ARIP and to continue building in line with Nigeria’s evolving regulatory framework. Our focus remains on strong governance, high compliance standards and meaningful user protection as we support the responsible and sustainable development of the digital asset ecosystem.”

KuCoin said its approach to international regulatory engagement prioritises local compliance requirements, governance, transparency, operational resilience and user protection.

The company also emphasised the importance of cooperation between regulators and industry participants in supporting sustainable digital asset markets.

KuCoin Nigeria must complete the applicable regulatory process. It must also obtain the necessary authorisations before it can begin offering services to Nigerian customers.
