World Cup semi-final pits Mbappe's France against Yamal's Spain

World Cup semi-final pits Mbappe's France against Yamal's Spain

France and Spain meet in Tuesday's World Cup semi-final in Dallas, a fixture that will determine whether an established superstar in Kylian Mbappe or a rising generational talent in Lamine Yamal leads their nation to the final.

France and Spain will meet in a World Cup semi-final in Dallas on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the July 19 final in New Jersey. France are chasing a third consecutive appearance in the final, while Spain aim to become only the fourth nation to simultaneously hold the World Cup and European Championship titles.

The fixture hinges on a compelling individual battle between France captain Kylian Mbappe and Spain's Lamine Yamal, who turned 19 on Monday. While Mbappe arrives as the tournament's joint top scorer, Yamal is searching for a breakthrough moment after a quiet start hampered by a prior hamstring injury.

Mbappe has been the driving force of France's attack, scoring eight goals in six games to tie Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot lead. His 19 career World Cup goals leave him one behind Messi's all-time record, having already surpassed Miroslav Klose's long-standing mark of 16.

The 27-year-old arrived at this tournament under scrutiny following two trophyless seasons at Real Madrid. "He's put in great numbers, but the perception in France and abroad is that he's a player who is detrimental to the collective," said French football journalist Luke Entwistle. "He has put that into action. The way France have been winning the ball back high this tournament would not have been possible otherwise."

Yamal has managed just one goal from 23 shots, a stark contrast to Mbappe's 27 per cent conversion rate. However, a lack of match fitness for Yamal and winger Nico Williams has forced Spain manager Luis de la Fuente to abandon the chaotic wing play that won Euro 2024 for a more controlled approach.

"It means Lamine Yamal is working with less space, more defenders doubling up on him, and less dynamism in Spain's game as a whole," said Spanish football journalist Ruairidh Barlow. "So to a certain extent, it's logical that he isn't dazzling." Despite the lower output, Yamal has completed twice as many dribbles as Mbappe and made eight tackles compared to the Frenchman's one.

The two players have a deeply intertwined recent history. Yamal has been on the winning side in eight of their ten previous meetings, though Mbappe has scored nine goals in those fixtures compared to Yamal's six. "I ask him to be calm," De la Fuente said of Yamal. "The big day for Lamine has yet to come at this World Cup."

For France, Mbappe's pursuit of a third World Cup triumph to equal Pelé's record remains the defining narrative. For Spain, the deference shown to Yamal underscores his status as the continent's next defining talent. "The next 15 to 20 years belong to Lamine, if he wants," wrote Xavi, who gave Yamal his Barcelona debut.
