Spurs bank record £50m from Brighton for unused defender Vuskovic

Tottenham have extracted a £50m fee for 19-year-old Luka Vuskovic without him playing a competitive match, highlighting the Premier League's capacity to generate outsized returns on unproven assets.

Brighton have completed the signing of Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur for a club-record fee that could reach £50m. The transfer comprises £46m guaranteed and £4m in achievable add-ons. The 19-year-old Croatia international arrives on the south coast after spending last season on loan at Hamburg.

The transaction underscores the extreme asset appreciation possible within top-tier European football. Vuskovic departs as Tottenham's fourth-most expensive sale, positioned behind only Harry Kane, Gareth Bale, and Kyle Walker. Tottenham achieved this financial milestone despite the defender never playing a competitive match for the club.

The move was driven by squad logistics and player representation. Vuskovic and his representatives made clear he wanted permanent first-team football rather than another loan. Tottenham could not provide that assurance after signing Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke, adding them to an existing defensive core of Cristian Romero, Kevin Danso, and Micky van de Ven.

Brighton's willingness to pay a record fee reflects their model of acquiring young European talent to develop and potentially sell on at a premium. For Tottenham, the deal structure mitigates the risk of losing a valuable prospect entirely. The club inserted a 20 per cent sell-on clause and matching rights, ensuring they retain a financial stake in his future career and the option to bring him back.

Elsewhere in the European market, Inter Milan are exploring a move for Tottenham and England full-back Djed Spence. The Italian champions are seeking a replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who completed a transfer to Real Madrid earlier this summer.

Inter's budget limitations, however, mean Spence is just one name on a broader list that includes Feyenoord's Givairo Read and Monaco's Vanderson. Spence's immediate future remains uncertain as he is currently competing at the World Cup with England. Everton have also held internal discussions about signing the full-back.
