Tuchel expects Argentina test to elevate England in World Cup semi-final

Tuchel expects Argentina test to elevate England in World Cup semi-final

England face Argentina in Wednesday's World Cup semi-final, a match that will determine whether Europe retains a guaranteed presence in the final against Spain.

England will play Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday at 8pm in Atlanta, with the winner advancing to face Spain on Sunday. For European football, the match is a pivotal moment. An England victory guarantees a second European side in the final, ensuring the continent retains a dominant stake in the tournament's conclusion.

Thomas Tuchel is focused on correcting the technical flaws that surfaced during England's extra-time quarter-final victory over Norway. "We had too many technical errors in our last match that hold us back from finding a rhythm," Tuchel explained. "We were rushed in our decision-making, not patient enough or disciplined enough and it cost us our rhythm."

The primary tactical challenge is Lionel Messi, who leads the tournament's scoring charts with eight goals. While Tuchel admitted he briefly considered an "old-school man mark", he indicated England will instead try to dictate the match. "Everyone knows the spaces where he wants to show up. If you analyse matches, he sees things faster," Tuchel noted.

The fixture carries considerable historical weight for the English public, a reality Tuchel is actively managing. "If a fixture has iconic moments, you cannot say it is just another football match," he said. To prevent the tension from becoming a distraction, the manager is restricting the volume of information given to his squad.

"We try to reduce information the bigger the stage gets and the bigger the tension," Tuchel added. He acknowledged his players are aware of the fixture's history but insisted his coaching staff will not discuss past events.

Tuchel believes the quality of the opposition will force an improvement from his players. "A set-up like [from Argentina] will bring the best out of us and the best out of our players," he said. England will attempt to reach the final by imposing their own style rather than merely reacting to the reigning world champions.
