Stolen Tomorrowland art tests security ahead of Vegas expansion

Two original artworks from Tomorrowland’s 2026 commissioned collection were stolen from the Belgian festival’s restaurant during its opening weekend. The theft tests the event's security protocols as the brand prepares for a major international expansion.

The missing pieces, titled ‘Love’ and ‘Desire’, formed part of a six-painting series exploring universal emotions for the festival’s 2026 Consciencia theme. Despite security measures being in place in the surrounding area, the works were taken from the Tomorrowland Restaurant. Four other paintings—‘Wonder’, ‘Anger’, ‘Joy’, and ‘Sadness’—remain on display.

Following a public appeal and the publication of images by Dutch-language platform Nieuwsblad on 21st July, one piece was recovered. “A very honest couple came by with the Love artwork. They returned it to the Lab of Tomorrow in Boom,” spokeswoman Debby Wilmsen said. “We appreciate that enormously.”

‘Desire’, however, remains missing. The festival announced this weekend that it is heading to Las Vegas next year, making the physical security of bespoke on-site installations a growing priority as the company scales its global footprint.

Wilmsen framed the incident as a backhanded compliment. “It is a compliment that the artworks are appreciated, but it would be nice if the Consciencia paintings could shine for festival-goers a little longer during the second weekend,” she said.

The opening weekend already required significant operational adjustments. Wildfire concerns forced a complete ban on fireworks and pyrotechnics during weekend one. Such disruptions underscore the environmental and logistical vulnerabilities of hosting massive outdoor events in Europe.

The festival’s draw remained strong despite the setbacks. Calvin Harris played his first-ever Tomorrowland set, while Charlotte de Witte made a surprise Mainstage appearance. FISHER closed with Avicii’s ‘Levels’, and the Symphony of Unity orchestra performed Faithless’s ‘Insomnia’.

The event also featured an emotional return for Spanish DJ B Jones following cancer recovery. Dimitri Vegas used his solo Mainstage set to pay tribute to Like Mike, who is stepping away from live touring due to health reasons.
