Boulder has fast access to a lot of wild spaces, but few are as cherished as Eldorado Canyon State Park , which protects a steep sandstone canyon rising from the banks of South Boulder Creek. You’ll find 18 miles of hiking trails, but the real show here is the world-class rock climbing. With more than 500 established routes, Eldorado Canyon is one of the top trad climbing destinations in the world.

Situated at the base of the iconic Flatirons, Chautauqua Park is an expansive meadow that provides access to 40 miles of singletrack, making it the go-to choice for an in-town hike or run. Start at the ranger cottage and cruise the 1.5-mile out-and-back Chautauqua Trail before branching out into more rugged trails among the Flatirons.

Pearl Street Mall is the heartbeat of downtown Boulder, with a variety of outdoor gear shops, boutiques, and restaurants along both sides of the pedestrian-only thoroughfare. Stroll past street performers juggling fire or playing bluegrass, catch a live show at the historic Boulder Theater, or just stop to smell the more than 15,000 tulips that bloom each spring in the flower beds lining the street.

One of the most popular routes in the Gold Hill area, the 14-mile Switzerland Trail is a hit with off-road enthusiasts and mountain bikers alike. The grades are gentle, making it an ideal entry point for first-time off-roaders, but the scenery is breathtaking with views deep into Colorado’s Front Range.

Flagstaff Mountain is in-town adventure at its finest. The City Park on the edge of Boulder offers fast access to steep hiking and endless boulders for climbing. Hike the 2.1-mile Flagstaff Trail to the top of Flagstaff Summit, but be prepared for a workout: The climbing starts immediately and doesn’t let up until the end, where big views of downtown Boulder await. Boulders are scattered throughout the park, with hundreds of established problems to explore, most of which are ideal for intermediate pebble wrestlers.

Scenic drives don’t get any more scenic than Trail Ridge Road , the two-lane that runs for 48 miles between Estes Park and Grand Lake, switchbacking through the center of Rocky Mountain National Park. The above-tree-line views at the road’s 12,183-foot apex are postcard-worthy, especially if you get out and stretch your legs. Hike a piece of the eight-mile Ute Trail for alpine terrain at its finest.

The Rockies are loaded with backcountry fly-fishing opportunities, but you don’t have to leave town to cast a line. The ice-cold Boulder Creek runs through town, offering easy access and hundreds of pools that collect small brown trout. If you want something a little more remote but still close to town, head upstream into Boulder Canyon, which offers miles of fishable water and a great chance for solitude.

Comfort food doesn’t have to be boring. River and Woods takes a locally grown approach to faves like steak frites and even the humble corndog, elevating them into dishes that are borderline whimsical. Save room for the table-side s’mores, which you can roast yourself right there. And it’s all served inside a historic miner’s cabin.
