Switzerland reach last 16 as £42m target Manzambi impresses

Switzerland secured their first World Cup knockout win in 88 years, while Freiburg winger Johan Manzambi further demonstrated the £42m valuation attracting Newcastle.

Switzerland defeated Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver to advance to the World Cup last 16. Goals from Breel Embolo after 10 minutes and Nottingham Forest's Dan Ndoye in the 46th minute ended a run of seven consecutive knockout defeats stretching back 88 years. The victory marks a significant moment in Swiss public life, witnessed by a crowd of 52,497 at BC Place.

For European club executives, the match served as a high-profile showcase for Freiburg winger Johan Manzambi. Aged 20 years and 261 days, the £42m-rated forward provided the assist for Embolo's opening goal with a blistering run that demonstrated the frightening pace and power concerning the Algeria players. Manzambi has now recorded five goal involvements at the tournament, making him the youngest player to reach that milestone at a World Cup since records began in 1966.

Transfer market implications

Manzambi's continued prominence on the global stage is likely to sustain Newcastle's reported interest. Manager Eddie Howe is monitoring the player, whose direct approach could easily translate to St James' Park. Freiburg will be aware that every successful appearance increases the negotiating leverage for a player valued at £42m.

On the pitch, Murat Yakin's side controlled the match after absorbing a bright start from Algeria. Riyad Mahrez, the former Manchester City star, was effectively neutralised. His only real opportunity of the evening was blocked by his former City team-mate, Manuel Aknaji.

Substitute Fabian Rieder missed an open goal late in the game to squander a chance for a third Swiss goal. Switzerland will now prepare to face the winner of the Colombia and Ghana tie in Vancouver on Tuesday at 9pm, with Manzambi poised to feature again in a match with direct financial implications for his club future.
