Spain's Simón breaks 34-year-old World Cup clean sheet record

Spain's Simón breaks 34-year-old World Cup clean sheet record

Spain's 3-0 victory over Austria saw goalkeeper Unai Simón surpass Italy's Walter Zenga to set a new World Cup record, setting up a heavyweight last-16 clash with Portugal.

Spain secured a place in the World Cup round of 16 with a commanding 3-0 victory over Austria in Los Angeles, a win that carried extra historical weight for goalkeeper Unai Simón. The Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper reached 519 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal for the national team, officially setting a new Guinness World Record.

By keeping a clean sheet against Austria, Simón eclipsed the previous benchmark of 518 minutes established by Italian goalkeeper Walter Zenga at the 1990 tournament. Zenga’s legendary streak was ultimately broken by a second-half goal from Argentina’s Claudio Caniggia in the semifinals of Italia '90.

Simón’s current run spans multiple tournaments, beginning with the final 39 minutes of a group-stage loss to Japan at Qatar 2022. That initial period was followed by 120 clean minutes against Morocco in the same tournament, a match Spain eventually lost on penalties. At the 2026 World Cup, Simón has since shut out Cape Verde, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, and Austria.

Against Austria, Spain’s attacking threat made the record seem inevitable, driven by players from Europe’s top domestic leagues. Mikel Oyarzabal of La Liga side Real Sociedad opened the scoring late in the first half, sweeping in a precise low cross from left-back Marc Cucurella.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Pedro Porro, representing the English Premier League, doubled the advantage in the 66th minute with a header, effectively ending Austrian resistance. Oyarzabal sealed the victory in the 89th minute, finishing coolly from another Cucurella delivery.

Despite the 3-0 scoreline, Austria’s Alexander Schlager kept the deficit respectable with several fine saves. Spain looked dangerous on nearly every attacking transition throughout the evening.

For the continent's sporting narrative, the result sets up a highly anticipated round-of-16 fixture between Spain and Portugal in Dallas on Monday. Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, advanced to this stage by defeating Croatia 2-1 in the round of 32.

The upcoming clash represents a significant meeting of European heavyweights. Simón’s newly minted record provides Spain with a notable psychological advantage as the knockout stages commence.
