Celtic captain Callum McGregor has confirmed he will remain with the club, leading the team into Monday’s season opener against Dundee. The 33-year-old midfielder dismissed recent links to a move to Saudi Arabia, stating his desire to end his career in Glasgow and win the Scottish Premiership "in a bit more style."
His commitment arrives as the club navigates a highly constrained transfer market. Chief executive Michael Nicholson recently noted that recruiting players has become "difficult" because Celtic is forced to compete for talent against English Championship clubs while managing complex agent negotiations.
This financial friction has triggered a significant roster overhaul. The club has lost key assets, including Japan forward Daizen Maeda, who joined Premier League side Ipswich Town, and striker Kelechi Iheanacho, who moved to Turkish outfit Bursaspor.
Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has also retired, and four loanees have returned to their parent clubs. To offset these departures, Celtic has brought in Camilo Duran and completed the club-record signing of Kasper Hogh to strengthen the attack.
The squad restructuring follows a highly volatile period for the organization. Manager Martin O'Neill was brought out of retirement to secure last season's league and cup double, following the acrimonious exit of Brendan Rodgers and a brief tenure by Wilfried Nancy.
Supporters previously staged extensive protests over perceived underinvestment and the team's failure to qualify for the Champions League after a defeat to Kairat Almaty. Reaching Europe's premier club competition remains a critical financial and sporting benchmark for the organization.
McGregor acknowledged the difficult circumstances of the past year but emphasized the resilience built within the squad. "You have to make sure when you face those challenges, you can overcome them," he said, highlighting the need for strong character among the players.
The immediate focus now shifts to the Champions League play-off draw on Monday, which will determine Celtic's path to the league phase. McGregor views European qualification as essential, noting that reaching the tournament "takes the club to a different level."
