Russian Strikes Kill Eight in Ukraine as Missile Briefly Enters Polish Airspace

A fresh wave of Russian attacks has killed at least eight civilians in Ukraine and sparked security alarms in NATO after a suspected missile briefly violated Polish airspace, underscoring the urgent strain on European air defence capabilities.

Russia launched a heavy barrage of missiles and drones across Ukraine overnight, killing at least eight people. During the same attack window, an unidentified object believed to be a missile entered Polish airspace before disappearing from radar.

Polish reports indicate the object was detected around 3:40 am CET. Helicopter crews later discovered a crater near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia after the object dropped off radar screens.

The strikes inflicted heavy civilian casualties across multiple Ukrainian regions. In Kryvyi Rih, a ballistic missile detonated in a residential house, killing four adults and two children aged five and 12.

The local defence council reported eight other people were wounded in the city, warning the death toll could rise. Additional attacks killed one person in a Poltava region warehouse and left at least 15 people wounded in the western city of Lviv.

The capital also sustained significant damage from the overnight assault. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that Russia was attacking the city with ballistic weapons. The military administration confirmed one person was killed and at least seven others were wounded across different districts.

"The threat of further attack remains present. Stay in shelters," Klitschko said early Thursday, noting that fires had broken out in several parts of the city.

The incident has intensified pressure on European partners to accelerate military support. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine is facing a critical shortage of air defence missiles, directly linking delayed deliveries to civilian casualties.

"This Russian terror once again proves that protection against the Russian missile threat is the most important task when it comes to saving the lives of our people," Zelenskyy wrote on X. He warned that "untimely assistance and delays in the delivery of anti-ballistic missiles lead to this kind of destruction, these kinds of casualties that, unfortunately, we are seeing today."

The suspected breach of Polish territory elevates the risk of direct confrontation between Russia and NATO. Ukraine’s acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha accused Moscow of violating NATO airspace, claiming a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile crossed into Poland during the massive strike.

The Kremlin has not issued an official response to the allegations. For European defence planners, the event highlights the persistent vulnerability of the continent’s eastern flank and the urgent demand for sustained air defence manufacturing and deployment.
