Arsenal prepare £80m bid for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes amid squad exodus

Arsenal are preparing an improved £80m offer for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, a move that highlights the financial and sporting pressures mounting on the Magpies as they face significant squad depletion.

Arsenal are increasingly confident of securing the signature of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes this summer. The 28-year-old Brazilian midfielder has made it clear he wants to join the Premier League champions, prompting the north London club to prepare an improved financial proposal.

The Gunners initially submitted a £70m bid earlier this month but are now aiming to agree a deal that could reach £80m in the coming days. Guimaraes, who has scored 31 goals in 195 appearances since his 2022 arrival from Lyon, is expected to return to Newcastle training shortly.

Despite the growing expectation of a transfer, Newcastle maintain that formal club-to-club discussions have not yet taken place. Sources indicate that Arsenal’s new proposal has not officially been submitted, leaving the final stages of negotiation unresolved.

This potential exit underscores a critical period of asset depletion for Newcastle. The club is already bracing for the departures of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, stripping the squad of key on-field value.

Compounding this sporting uncertainty, Eddie Howe stepped down as head coach on Thursday after five years in charge. Matthias Jaissle, currently managing Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli, is anticipated to succeed him, though sources insist Guimaraes’s potential exit is unrelated to Howe’s departure.

Arsenal’s targeted approach reflects a disciplined valuation strategy in an inflated transfer market. The club recently declined the opportunity to match Chelsea’s £117m offer for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, refusing to exceed their strict £80m valuation limit for that target.

By redirecting that financial capacity toward Guimaraes, Arsenal are attempting to secure a proven Premier League asset without breaching their fiscal thresholds. For Newcastle, the challenge now shifts to reinvesting the substantial incoming transfer fees while rebuilding under new management.
