Liverpool's Elliott targets squad revival as Gomez injury tests defensive depth

Liverpool's Elliott targets squad revival as Gomez injury tests defensive depth

Harvey Elliott is targeting a renewed role at Liverpool following a stalled loan move, while a muscle injury to Joe Gomez has exposed the club's defensive vulnerabilities ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Harvey Elliott has returned to Liverpool seeking to rebuild his career after a difficult season-long loan at Aston Villa. The 23-year-old midfielder made only nine appearances and logged 277 minutes for the Midlands club, falling one game short of a mandatory £35m transfer clause. He originally joined Fulham's academy before making his Premier League debut at 16, eventually moving to Anfield in 2019.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery previously described the situation as embarrassing for everyone involved. Reflecting on the stint, Elliott noted he wanted to step outside his comfort zone to develop as a player but admitted the experience was mentally taxing. He added that he holds no hard feelings and wishes the club well after helping them secure a historical Europa League triumph.

The midfielder, who was named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2025 with the England Under-21s, has featured in both pre-season matches under new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola. He played regularly under Jurgen Klopp but saw reduced minutes during the 2024-25 title-winning season under Arne Slot. Elliott described his return to Merseyside as a second chance to impress the new coaching staff and cement his place in the squad.

Meanwhile, the club faces an immediate defensive crisis as centre-back Joe Gomez will miss the start of the Premier League season. Manager Andoni Iraola confirmed the defender sustained a muscle injury during a 4-2 victory over Sunderland, speaking the morning after a 1-0 friendly win against Wrexham in New York. Iraola noted that Gomez complained immediately, and while the issue is not massive, it will keep him out for roughly a month.

This setback leaves Liverpool unusually thin at the back, complicating their preparations and squad rotation for the upcoming campaign. With Giovanni Leoni also sidelined and Virgil van Dijk absent from the current North American pre-season tour, the team has been forced to rely on academy products. Iraola acknowledged the lack of senior options but praised the resilience of his young defenders.

Iraola highlighted the composure shown by 18-year-old defenders Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe, alongside Luke Chambers, during recent matches. The manager also confirmed that Jeremy Jacquet is prepared to make his debut against Leeds in Chicago on Sunday. This provides crucial depth as the team navigates these early-season absences.
