Mercedes leaves door open for Verstappen as F1 prepares European finale

Mercedes leaves door open for Verstappen as F1 prepares European finale

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has signaled openness to a future Max Verstappen partnership, while Formula 1 prepares to relocate its season finale to Europe due to Middle East instability, highlighting the sport's dual focus on corporate strategy and geopolitical risk management.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has confirmed he is not opposed to pairing Max Verstappen with Kimi Antonelli in the future, following the two men being spotted on holiday together in Sardinia. The Mercedes boss stated that while the current lineup of Antonelli and George Russell remains secure, a future partnership with the Dutch driver is a possibility the team is willing to consider.

Wolff told Sky Sports Germany that Verstappen is currently driving at his peak, though he emphasized the need to give Antonelli time to develop. "We're not afraid of having the two of them in the same team at some point," Wolff said, noting he would handle the dynamic better than he did with Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. He added that adding another variable now would not be right for the team's long-term development, as Russell currently sits third in the standings, 59 points behind his championship-leading teammate.

Verstappen previously downplayed the Sardinia meetings, stating they discussed everything except Formula 1 and that their children played together. For a major corporate entity like Mercedes, driver personnel decisions are closely watched by investors and sponsors, as on-track success directly influences commercial revenue and global brand positioning.

Beyond the paddock's personnel strategies, Formula 1 is actively managing geopolitical risks that threaten its global broadcast and event revenues. Chief executive Stefano Domenicali confirmed that the championship will relocate its final two races to Europe if the ongoing conflict in the Middle East prevents the sport from traveling to Qatar and Abu Dhabi.

Domenicali stated that a decision will be made if the situation is not clear by the middle of September. "In that case, the end of the season will be in Europe, because we cannot go to other places," he told international media, acknowledging that there are possibilities on the table but refusing to make premature promises.

Shifting the season finale to Europe carries significant economic implications for the sport and host regions. Relocating the event keeps the associated tourism, hospitality, and broadcast revenues within the continent rather than risking the logistical and financial disruptions of the Middle East conflict.
