Spotify adds User Notes feature to compete with Apple Music and YouTube Music

Spotify adds User Notes feature to compete with Apple Music and YouTube Music

The streaming giant has introduced a new personalization tool allowing listeners to attach text to individual tracks, a strategic move to build user loyalty and distinguish its platform from major competitors.

Spotify rolled out a new feature called User Notes on Thursday, allowing listeners to attach personal text captions to individual tracks within their playlists. The update enables subscribers to record specific memories tied to a song, such as the location where they first heard it or the context of a first date.

To use the tool, users must open a playlist, access the three-dot menu next to a specific track, and select the option to add a note. These captions become visible to anyone with access to the playlist, and the author's name links directly to their public profile.

The company has restricted the feature to users aged 16 and older. It is currently available across both free and premium subscription tiers, though Spotify has limited the initial rollout to select markets.

For investors and market analysts, the launch highlights Spotify’s ongoing strategy to deepen user engagement in a highly competitive streaming sector. By transforming standard song collections into interactive, journaling-style spaces, the company aims to create a unique value proposition that its primary rivals cannot easily replicate.

This differentiation is crucial as Spotify battles for market share against deep-pocketed competitors like Apple Music and YouTube Music. Neither of those platforms currently offers a comparable tool for attaching personal context to music discovery.

In a statement regarding the launch, the company emphasized the long-term value of the data and user experience. “Over time, these notes paint a picture of the music listeners love and the moments that shaped it,” the company said.

The firm also noted that the update shifts the fundamental nature of its core product. “User Notes transforms playlists from a collection of songs into a more personal space for music discovery — bringing together personalization and added context around the music that listeners love,” the company added.

Beyond playlist personalization, the company used Thursday's announcement to debut a secondary feature called Running Mode. This tool dynamically cues up tracks based on the different phases of a workout, adjusting selections according to a user’s specific preferences and physical pace.

Unlike the text-based playlist feature, the new audio tool is restricted to paying subscribers. Running Mode is currently limited to premium users located in select countries, reflecting a tiered approach to rolling out advanced personalization tools.
